In case you missed it, Derry Girls is a Northern Ireland-based comedy series that follows four high school teenage girls who indulge in all kinds of shenanigans.
It has been labeled a Netflix Original but is actually produced by Channel 4 in the UK and distributed internationally by Netflix. There have been many Channel 4 shows that have appeared exclusively on Netflix over the past few years in a similar fashion.
The second season has been shown on Netflix worldwide now since August 2, 2019. However, those in the UK will likely have about a year to wait before it airs there.

Thanks to the success of the show on Channel 4 and its international shows via Netflix, it has instant renewal When the second season ended in April 2019.
Commenting on the renewal, show host and creator Lisa McGee said, “I love writing this show and am so excited to continue the Dairy Girls story, thank you to Channel 4, and Erin and the live Eeejits for fighting another day!
What to expect from Derry Girls Season 3
The show’s third season is scheduled to take place around the same time as the Good Friday deal. This means that the series is set roughly in 1998 for season 3.
The main cast will be around 17 years old for the new season.
Designer Lisa McGee said in an interview:
“They will have to evolve this series a bit قليلا [but] They’re still eejits, they still have a lot of issues from being embarrassed and doing all the things you’d expect from the Derry Girls, but they have to deal with some big things this time around.
When will Derry Girls season 3 be on Netflix?
As you know with UK software, they often do not meet a fixed release schedule.
However, the Dairy Girls had to stick to an annual schedule (plus or minus a few months) and we originally expected that to happen in late 2020 or 2021. However, it now appears that that won’t happen. It’s not thanks to the C word that we’ve all experienced throughout 2020. According to DigitalSpy, production was originally scheduled to begin in June 2020.
According to ProductionIntelligence, a website that tracks British productions, filming is currently not expected to begin before “the end of 2021”.
In an interview with The Irish Mirror, Tara Lynn O’Neill who plays Ma Mary confirmed that filming is taking place in 2021 with the goal of releasing the show in early 2022. She told the Mirror:
“It’s happening this year, it’s definitely happening this year! If we leave it for another year, we’ll all be retired! It’s going to be called Old Derry!” fire this year,
So what will happen is that the show will air first in the UK on Channel 4 and then Netflix in the US and most other regions shortly after that. Netflix UK will have another long wait.
Another thing we should quickly note is that the series is also currently slated to be released in cinemas. It remains to be seen if this replaces the fourth season.
