Oleg Deripaska is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The FBI spokesperson was stingy on details and declined to reveal more information.

Mr. Deripaska made his fortune in the aluminum sector. It was mentioned several times in a report by Robert Mueller, the former head of the FBI, regarding foreign interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Mr. Deripaska also had ties to Paul Manafort, a former Trump campaign manager who was convicted of eight financial crimes related to the Mueller investigation. Subsequently, Mr. Trump pardoned him.

Under the Trump administration, the Treasury Department has also lifted sanctions on three companies linked to Mr. Deripaska. Officials explained at the time that this decision was made because Mr. Deripaska’s direct and indirect interests in these companies had been diminished to the point that he no longer controlled them.
