Procedural masks are found among the wreckage that we now find everywhere in cities. However, these discarded masks are still effective, as revealed by a team of French researchers.

“These masks are made of plastic and polypropylene, and we’ve shown that we can wash them up to 10 times without losing the effectiveness of aeration or filtration quality,” explained Jean-Pierre Alcaraz, design engineer in the university’s TIMC laboratory. Grenoble Alpes, in front of Richard Martineau’s microphone on QUB Radio.
The washing procedure is rather simple: just wash the masks by machine or by hand, says the engineer. To reduce the risk, it is also better to prefer a procedure mask.
“What we have shown is that these fabric masks perform inferior to surgical masks, they filter 90%. They are safer and they protect better, five times better. When you don’t have a mask for six minutes, you emit,” Mr. Alcaraz added. As many particles as a surgical mask in five hours and a cloth mask in one hour.”
Even when washed and then sanitized, it can be worn by someone else. However, this practice needs to be tested on a larger scale before it can be applied on a large scale.
However, these recommendations do not apply to N95 masks.
