Vaccine: Is the UK really performing better than France?

The ambitious target of 15 million people vaccinated in mid-February was announced by Boris Johnson. A bet placed by the British Prime Minister who rushed to announce the news on 14 February.

After seeing many criticisms of managing the crisis, the United Kingdom was the first state in the world to give the green light to the vaccine from Pfizer-Bioentech, and then Astrogeneca – formed in conjunction with the university from Oxford – to launch a vaccine campaign on December 8, 2020.

Expected campaign

This figure of more than 15 million is really impressive compared to the 2,249,685 people who received at least one dose in France. However, the French vaccination rate is not very slow in Europe and follows the same curve as our European neighbors.

According to the latest figures, 2,736,109 people in Germany received at least one dose, 1,707,749 in Italy and 1,422,560 in Spain. It should be noted that France has so far received 4.5 million doses of vaccines.

Many strategic choices have helped the UK achieve this high-level vaccine. First, among Brexit, it was a quick process to approve the two first vaccines and launch its campaign as early as three weeks before France.

AstraZeneca decided to pay for the vaccine (which is in large quantities by giving two million doses each week) regardless of age, while France and its neighbors currently prioritize people under the age of 65 due to a lack of data.

Dangerous challenge

But the most notable choice of the British government was undoubtedly the delay between the two injections of the vaccine. When France has refused to extend the deadline Between the two doses, the UK postpones the second injection for up to 12 weeks.

He justifies this position A study at the University of Oxford, Which is currently being tested, concludes that the AstraZeneca vaccine may be effective from the first dose, both of which protect against severe forms of the disease and slow its spread. This is the deadline for the Pfizer vaccine The lab recommends a maximum of three to six weeks Interval between two injections.

This choice has an immediate impact on the number of people who have been fully vaccinated, i.e. those who have received two doses of the vaccine. This is because even if at least one dose is received behind this magnificent figure of the British, it hides a small number of vaccinators.

Thus in Italy, 75% are fully vaccinated, 52% are Germans and 28% are French – 633,771 of the 2,249,685 vaccinated received the second dose. Only 4% of those vaccinated in the UK are fully vaccinated.

This strategy, which relies almost entirely on AstraZeneca, may be undermined by resistance to variants to its vaccines. The lab says it hopes to provide an excellent vaccine against these mutations, but not before the fall.

Today the United Kingdom is the country with the highest death toll in Europe at 121,000.
