This additive irritates the intestines

See the labels of the foods you buy! According to a study conducted by French researchers, food additives disrupt the balance of microbes in the intestine. It could be an environmental factor that explains intestinal diseases.

What is the role of additives on the intestines?

How can a person get Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis? Yes Researchers agree that genetic factors have been identified to explain IBDSeveral research teams have studied environmental factors. This is the case of researcher Benoît Chassaing and his team who were interested in the effect of diet on the gut microbiota.

Scientists wanted to understand the role of some food additives, such as emulsifiers, on the intestines. To do this, they invited healthy volunteers, who divided them into two groups. One ate a strictly controlled diet without any additives, the other an identical diet but supplemented with Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is an artificial emulsifier added to many processed foods to improve texture and extend shelf life.

Disturbed intestinal microbes due to this additive

After two weeks, the researchers note that, In participants consuming CMC, the composition of the bacteria in the gut was altered, with a marked decrease in the amount of some species known to play beneficial roles in human health, such as fecal feces. The volunteers were more likely to have abdominal pain and flatulence. Finally, a colonoscopy made it possible to establish that in people who took CMC, the intestinal bacteria were close to the intestinal walls. This feature is seen in inflammatory bowel disease and type 2 diabetes.

These results indicate that long-term consumption of CMC can negatively affect the gut microbiota and thus promote chronic inflammatory diseases as well as liberalize metabolism in humans. This additive is more commonly referred to as cellulose gum or E466 on labels. It is used in the composition of many foods such as ice cream, dessert creams, light creams, sauces, instant noodles, milk bread, tortillas, chewing gum, syrups …
