The US is demanding that Russia immediately release opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

PARIS, September 10 (Europe Press) –

According to the Biden administration, the Russian government prevented Navalny and his lawyers from communicating freely by monitoring meetings and delaying the exchange of documents between Navalny and his legal team.

The State Department said the interception was “further evidence of politically motivated persecution and his repeated solitary confinement for minor infractions.”

“His detention upon his return to Russia was already embarrassing, but the Kremlin’s continued insistence on persecution only underscores his insecurities and fear of truth-tellers,” the letter said.

In mid-August, Navalny called on the West from his prison cell to impose tougher sanctions on Russian oligarchs.

Considered a political prisoner, the Kremlin dissident is currently serving a nine-year sentence for fraud and contempt.

Navalny survived a poisoning attempt on a domestic flight to Siberia in August 2020, after which he was sent to Germany for medical treatment for several months before voluntarily returning to Russia, where he was promptly detained for violating the conditions of his parole.
