Texas | Once again authorize investigations targeting parents of transgender minors

(Washington) The Texas Supreme Court on Friday again authorized investigations of the parents of transgender children by authorities in this conservative southern state, overturning a court decision that halted the proceedings.

Posted yesterday at 4:10pm.

The court, in March, ended enforcement of a controversial directive from Republican Governor Greg Abbott, which equated the “gender change” actions of minors with criminally reprehensible “offense.”

In its ruling, seen by AFP, the Supreme Court ruled that the appeals court had “misjudged” in issuing a statewide order.

On the other hand, the authorities cannot appeal the investigation targeting the parents of a transgender teenager to take the case to justice, and the court ruled, considering that such an investigation would cause them “irreparable harm”.

According to the human rights organization ACLU, “Today’s decision is a victory for our clients and the rule of law,” praising the “partial” victory in a tweet.

“While this decision is limited to current plaintiffs, it is clear that the implementation of this decision is causing suffering for young people and their families,” she added.

“These cruel attacks on transgender youth must stop,” the organization said.

Because of this directive from Governor Abbott, the mother of a teenage transgender girl was suspended by her employer – Texas Family Services – and visited by an inspector who was investigating whether her 16-year-old daughter, “was not in the process of converting from male to female,” according to The complaint filed by the family.

The issue has taken on a national dimension, to the extent that US President Joe Biden has decried in this directive a “cynical and dangerous campaign targeting transgender children and their parents”.

The care that should be given to transgender minors, just like their participation in sports competitions or the use of toilets specific to the gender they identify with, is a topic of lively debate in the United States as many conservative states have embraced these recent years of restrictive regulations.
