The prestigious Sony Photography Competition has revealed the winners of its 2021 edition. British photographer Craig Easton caused an uproar with a photo essay in the northern Manchester town.
Once again, this is a great choice made by the jury members of the popular Sony photography competition. After receiving thousands of entries and then counting tens of thousands of photos, they announced the winners of the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards on Thursday.
The most famous title, Photographer of the Year, was awarded to Craig Easton for his work in England called Punk Top. The British documentary filmmaker traveled north of Manchester, to Blackburn, to immortalize its residents after British media deemed this city “the most exclusive in Great Britain”. In close cooperation with academic and writer Abdulaziz Hafez, he pushed the doors of Bank Top’s homes to discover its residents and their stories and thus reveal his vision.
“I’m filming to learn”
This investigative work, which went on for a year, greatly impressed the jury. “These are not people who necessarily want to be photographed, but Craig has gained their trust. They look candidly at the camera and we see mutual understanding between the photographer and his subjects.” Competition President Mike Tru said “The moral weight behind this work is what makes it so important and deserves this award. “I am delighted that this work has been recognized by the Sony World Photography Awards. I photograph to learn, and try to understand, document, and share stories. It is an honor for me to be able to do so and challenge perceptions and stereotypes, this fight is very dear to me.” . Craig Easton replied in a press release.
