The Shadow and Bone books will continue to be modified as Netflix renewed the fantasy series for a season 2. Based on the first two books from Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse, the story centers on a female cartographer who discovers she has the ability. Magic to summon the Light and reveal their abilities creates new tensions between some nations. With the help of General Kerrigan, Grisha with the power to control the darkness, Alina must use her powers to destroy a region of impenetrable darkness that has defiled the earth for hundreds of years.
The cast of this Netflix drama includes Jesse May Lee, Archie Reno, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kate Young, Ben Barnes, and Zoe Wanamaker. The development of the project was accelerated by Netflix after it acquired the rights to the novel series in early 2019. Bird Box screenwriter Eric Heisserer was responsible for creation, writing, display and executive production along with Shawn Levy and Banner 21 Laps Entertainment, which struck a deal with the streaming platform. Shadow and Bone was released on the streaming platform last April and received rave reviews from both critics and audiences, which seem to have translated into its audience personalities as well.
Just over a month after the series first aired on its platform, Netflix released a video announcing that Shadow and Bone has been renewed for a season 2. Part of the main cast announces the start of a new season of the fantasy drama and thanks fans for making the first season a success. Check out the video ad below:
Fans of the series won’t be surprised to learn that the streaming platform has chosen to greenlight a new chapter in the adaptation. Nielsen’s streaming numbers indicate that the series reached 1.2 billion minutes of watch time in its second week on the service, and the drama has been a hit for Netflix audiences. Additionally, as Heisserer and Bardugo discussed the idea for a second season prior to the series’ release, fans were hoping those plans would come to fruition.
Now that the fantasy genre has a hiatus the size of Game of Thrones, studios are eager to try to capitalize on that absence, and Shadow and Bone, along with The Witcher’s quote, seems to be in line with their goals. Plus, with Netflix stopping spending $200 million on Mark Millar’s Jupiter legacy, budget space has been freed up for a major project like Shadow and Bone: The Grisha Saga. For those who weren’t sure they wanted to watch the series, now is the time to catch up on the series before it comes back for new episodes.
