Pique, after a career already carefully planning

Gerard Pique stunned the footballing world on Thursday with the sudden announcement of his retirement, but beyond his career was long planned: investments in real estate, video games, football, tennis … and a goal, in the end: the presidency of FC Barcelona.

“He will be president of Barcelona, there is no doubt about that,” La Liga president Javier Tebas said Thursday evening on Spanish radio Cope.

“He has three arguments to offer: he has spent 25 years at the club, he knows football as a player, and he knows the sports sector from his leading side. I am sure he can make a great president. For FC Barcelona,” added the sulfur chief.

“I will be back sooner or later,” the defender himself hinted in the video he posted on Thursday to announce the end of his career.

“Coach, I can’t imagine it. I won’t have much fun with it. On the other hand, I think I’ll do well, boss. That’s what excites me,” explained this Blaugrana’s grandson in the 2016 leader (his grandfather was Amador Bernabeu).

But before he can be elected to the top position by socios (pro-contributors), the 35-year-old Catalan defender will have to continue making his claws in the entrepreneurial world, where he has known at least many more failures than successes. .

– Real estate, restaurant, video games –

His meeting with singer Shakira during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (which Spain won) opened the doors to the world of sports business, and Pique will organize his investments around four main axes.

First, real estate. In 2009, even before he met the Colombian star, Pique founded Crad Holdings, a company he runs with his father, Joan Pique. After a permanent rise in numbers, the company lost 2.1 million euros in 2020, a year weighed down by the Covid-19 virus.

Then the video game sector. In 2011, the footballer founded his own online game development company, Kerad Games, which has since been liquidated. Ten years later, he befriended superstar eBay Janos, and the two launched their own esports team in 2021, called KOI.

In 2018, Pique and Shakira – who split in June 2022 after having two children – opened a luxury beachfront restaurant in Barcelona. But this will close in 2020 due to the pandemic.

In the same year, Pique acquired 99% of the shares of FC Andorra, then in the Spanish Fifth Division, expelling the club from its debts of 200,000 euros. At the end of the 2018-2019 season, Andorra sportingly secured its D4 ticket and was even authorized to climb to the D3 by reclaiming the liquidated Reus Deportiu place.

In May 2022, FC Andorra joined Spain’s D2, becoming the first foreign team to participate in a professional tournament in Spain.

– Davis Cup and scandal –

The last axis: sporting events. In the summer of 2017, Pique took advantage of the off-season to take a week-long course in Business, Entertainment, Media and Sports at Harvard University in the United States.

His mentor blow will come in 2017: with the leader of the Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten, he met at a dinner organized by Shakira to bring Japanese investors closer to FC Barcelona, he founded a sports and entertainment company called Kosmos.

A year later, Cosmos acquired the Davis Cup for €2.5 billion over 25 years and embarked on a major overhaul of the competition which, for many, is completely distorting the event.

In April 2022, a scandal broke out in Spain: Cosmos received 24 million euros in commissions to help the Spanish Federation (RFEF) organize the Spanish Football Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

This is the last quarrel caused by the actions of the future retired Pique, who will wear his football shirt for the last time at the Camp Nou on Saturday in the Spanish League against Almeria, before wearing, once and for all, the hat of the businessman.
