What would be the rule without exception? The Netflix streaming platform implemented a big change on Tuesday: Users must now pay extra to share their access codes with people outside their home.
In an email sent to everyone involved, the service specifies that each account is only for the subscriber and “the people who live with it.” Thus, those who share access are offered the option to pay an additional €5.99 for each additional user outside the household or to transfer the profile of a person outside the household who will have to subscribe to their own subscription but will therefore retain their preferences.
Shared custody or a second home
The day after this big announcement, Netflix clarified with BFM TV That there is an exception. Designed specifically for children in shared custody or second home owners. Depending on the platform, if two networks – and therefore two IP addresses – are regularly used to connect to the same account, there is no need to pay the extra. They will be considered part of the same family.
This exclusion also applies to mobile devices (phones and tablets), which can connect to two different wifi networks while they are associated with one account. But be careful, in this specific case, you must regularly connect your devices to each of the networks associated with the user, otherwise your account will be banned on one of them. Initially, Netflix mentioned the 31-day limit before going back and specifying that the service didn’t want to communicate about it.
During testing last summer in several Latin American countries, the platform planned to charge any connection (even normal, so) as an additional account outside of the main place of residence.
