NCAA student-athletes in the US will now be able to use their name to obtain some form of compensation, starting Thursday.
NCAA Division I leaders announced Wednesday that athletes will have the right to use their name and image for sponsored partnerships. This will apply in all 50 US states. Seven states will take the law into effect Thursday, while another 12 will see their version adopted from 2022.
Thus, student-athletes will be able to generate personal profits by signing autographs, representing sponsors, advertising contracts, YouTube channels, Twitter videos, private lessons and merchandise sales. All without worrying about their eligibility to play a NCAA sport under the laws imposed on amateur athletes.
