At least 14 people, including ten guards, were killed in an armed attack at a Ciudad Juarez prison on the border with the United States, during which at least 24 inmates escaped, officials said Sunday.
Four people were injured in the attack, the Chihuahua state attorney’s office said in a statement.
It happened at dawn when armed men arrived in armored vehicles and opened fire on the guards.
At the same time, the families of the prisoners were waiting to go inside the prison to meet their relatives ahead of the New Year.
According to the first elements of the investigation, the purpose of the attack was to facilitate the escape of the group of prisoners.
With the help of the military, police arrested four people, without specifying whether they were escaped prisoners or the attackers, the prosecutor’s office added.
A prison in this northern Mexican city houses members of armed branches of the Sinaloa and Juárez cartels, which have been fighting for control of the city for more than fifteen years.
More details to come.
