Leila Fernandez starts her journey with her right foot

Leila Annie Fernandez has plenty of points to defend at the US Open, which reached the final in 2021. Quebecers began their journey to the last major slam of the season in great fashion, on Monday in New York, with a victory over France’s Ocean. Dodin in sets 6-3 and 6-4.

The maple leaf actress, 14 in the world, flew over the first set in just over 30 minutes, and broke her opponent, 98 on the WTA, twice to get there. On the other hand, it was broken once.

In the second set, the Canadian was challenged a bit more, but she repeated a similar scenario to evade the set in over 40 minutes.

Fernandes was good at handling balls in hand, hitting 10 aces as well as placing 60% between the lines of her first serve, winning 74% of the subsequent advances. The only disgrace to her record would undoubtedly be the two break points she faced and which she was unable to salvage. She was, however, opportunistic, diverting half of the break points she offered herself.

In the next round, she will face Russian Lyudmila Samsonova, the 35th racket in the world. The latter beat Czech Sarah Bilic in the qualifiers, 6-3, 6-1.
