Lawmakers want to ban TikTok in the US

A group of lawmakers wants to ban TikTok in the US through a new bill, after years of serious concerns within the Trump and Biden administrations, according to CNBC.

TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has raised concerns in the US that Chinese government officials were able to access US user data.

TikTok has insisted on storing user data outside of China, which should keep it out of reach of government officials.

However, the company’s claims did little to reassure lawmakers. According to CNBC, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States is currently in talks with the company on how to resolve some data issues.

FBI Director Christopher Wray recently told Congress that he was “very concerned” about the potential influence of the Chinese government through TikTok on American users, according to CNBC.

According to a press release, the new bill would prohibit “all transactions by any social media company in or under the influence of China, Russia, and many other foreign countries of concern.”
