Joint statement of the foreign ministers of the three countries (France, the United States, Saudi Arabia) – (21.09.22)

Representatives of France, the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia met today on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the situation in Lebanon. The following statement is shared by the ministers of these three countries:

Our three countries express their unwavering support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, security and stability. As the Lebanese Parliament prepares to elect a new president, we stress the necessity of holding the elections on time according to the constitution. It is necessary to elect a president who is able to unite the Lebanese people and work with regional and international actors to overcome the current crisis. We call for the formation of a government capable of implementing urgent structural and economic reforms to resolve the political and economic crises that Lebanon is facing, especially the reforms needed to reach an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

We are ready to work side by side with Lebanon to support the implementation of the necessary measures to achieve these fundamental reforms, which are essential to the future prosperity, stability and security of this country. We recognize the essential role that the Lebanese Army and the Internal Security Forces continue to play, as legitimate defenders of Lebanon’s sovereignty and internal stability, in protecting the Lebanese people during this unprecedented crisis. We stress the need for the Lebanese government to implement the provisions of UN Security Council Resolutions 1559, 1701, 1680, 2650 and other relevant international resolutions, including those issued by the League of Arab States, and to respect the Taif Agreement. Which helps maintain national unity and civil peace in Lebanon. »
