John Herdman and Canada are set to make history in Edmonton

In the cold weather, after hard rides, Costa Rica and Mexico will try to snatch valuable points from the Reds (2-0-4, 10 points), who are unbeaten in third place in the final stage.

Canada learned to play the Northern Earth card. On Tuesday, at a news conference, a reporter particularly reminded Herdman of a qualifying match that took place in March 2016, at BC Place in Vancouver, when Benito Floro was Canadian coach.

For this meeting with the Mexicans, the organizers thought opening the stadium’s roof, as well as the artificial turf, would slow down visitors. The strategy did not work. Mexico won 3-0. Herdmann, who was then the head of the women’s team, remembers him well. It’s not cold out there, the B.C. resident explained with a laugh, and the temperature wouldn’t go over 15 degrees in this stadium with the roof open.

Herdman said Edmonton is a different story.

I faced South Korea and Japan here in October [2013 et 2014, avec l’équipe féminine]The Canadian coach recalls, I could barely move my lips on the sidelines. The opponent will have to adapt. We can say that there is no evidence against professional athletes, but each team has weaknesses. We went to Azteca, with altitude and pollution. We went to Jamaica, where the humidity and heat. These are small advantages of the opponent, which go to the minds of the players.

We could have played in British Columbia under one roof. We could have gone back to Toronto. But we think that’s where we’re going to make history.

These two home games are definitely decisive. On November 12, while Panama (fourth place behind Canada by two points) will play a captivating but nonetheless complex match in Honduras, the Reds will be able to carve out a seven-point gap between themselves and their opponents for the time being.

Four days later, they will face a Mexican team returning from a crucial game in the United States, two time zones east of Edmonton.

Herdman expects, however, that Canada’s competitor will be able to count on the support of supporters on the go or from existing communities here. So he wants a crowded Commonwealth stadium clad in red and filled with not only football fans, but also Hockey fans, basketball fans, Patriots Why not Canadians of Mexican descent Totally convinced of what we did at Azteca to wear our jersey.

We need that support that will take us to the next level, Herdman added. A six-point harvest could lead us to the top of the pack. It’s the new Canada that doesn’t just intend to qualify for the World Cup. He wants to win the CONCACAF qualifying group.

With what the Canadian national team has demonstrated for months, ambition appears well-established, especially as their great star undoubtedly swells.

Alphonso Davies, who scored a superb goal against Panama on October 13 in Toronto, will represent Canada in the city where he first grew up.

He is a player with such talent and quality, Herdman said, that it only happens once in a generation. it’s ready. I think he doesn’t need any motivation, but 55,000 people can push him to score more goals.

These two games in Edmonton will be the Canadians’ last in 2021. From January 27 to March 30, 2022, they will travel to Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama, as well as host the United States and Jamaica, in hopes of qualifying for the men’s World Cup for the first time since 1986.
