Home athletes almost honored

Nicolette Becancourt. The COVID-19 pandemic has halted many sports majors in the past year. This did not prevent Sport-Hommage Mauricie from highlighting the distinction and societal commitment of athletes from the Mauricie and Nicolet-Bécancour on March 6.

Indeed, the Desjardins Sport-Hommage Coups de cur evening featured more than forty athletes, coaches and events. The event, which replaced the traditional Desjardins Sport-Tribute party, was broadcast on television. On this occasion, honorary degrees and scholarships totaling $ 16,000 were awarded.

Some of the “Sports Achievement 2020” recipients came from our region: Jean-Philippe Parr (golf), Justin Raymond (volleyball) and Zachary Bulldock (hockey). He was also awarded a “Hats off” award for Hugo Hall (cycling).

Jean-Philippe Parr is a young golfer from Saint-Celestine. He starred as much on the circuits of Quebec as in the United States, within the American Junior Golf Association. At the age of 16, he is a junior regional champion and joined the Canadian golf classes. It is one of the best prospects for his sport in the country.

Justin Raymond is a Saint Leonard Dston volleyball player. Chosen to be the first all-star team of the Quebec Student Sports Network (RSEQ) and hold the “RSEQ MVP” title for the 2019-2020 season. She participated in the Canadian College Volleyball Championship and was recruited by Rouge et Or at Laval University.

Zachary Bulldock from Becancour. He plays in Hockey Major League (LHJMA), at Rimouski Oceanic. He was named “Rookie of the Year” by the league and was set as a pick for the first round in the upcoming NHL Draft. The 17-year-old is the attacking captain of his team.

Hugo Houle gave an exceptional performance during the Tour de France 2020. A rider from Sainte-Perpétue completed the 21-stage episode in 47th place in the overall classification. Six times, he has completed a stage in the top twenty, an unparalleled achievement by a Quebec athlete in Mecca for road cycling.
