A fighting cock equipped with knives for an illegal battle in southern India killed its owner, prompting authorities to hunt down the organizers.
Police said the man was severely injured while releasing the animal to fight, but the blades attached to the cock’s legs struck him in the groin as the beast escaped.
Unable to reach the hospital, the animal’s owner died of his injury after losing a lot of blood.
Authorities told AFP that the man was among a group of 16 people who took part in illegal fighting in the village of Lothunor, said P. Jeevan of the local police.
The rooster was kept for a while at the police station before being sent to the bird farm.
“We are looking for another 15 people involved in organizing the illegal fighting,” Jeevan said.
These persons may face charges of manslaughter, illegal betting and cockfights.
Although such fights are banned, they are still popular in rural areas of the states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Odisha.
Thousands of roosters die every year in these events which continue to draw crowds despite everything.
