Thousands of flights were affected in Australia on Friday, with more than 100 domestic flights canceled from Sydney and Melbourne.
A spokesman for the Jetstar flight behind most of the cancellations told the BBC that most of the affected passengers had been booked within hours of their original departure so they could reach their destination by Christmas time.

More and more Britons are being forced to drop their Christmas holiday plans as Austria becomes the latest country to impose stricter restrictions on British tourists entering the country.
From Christmas Day, anyone coming to Austria from the UK will be required to provide proof of double vaccination and incentive, as well as evidence of a negative PCR test.
Anyone without documents will be asked to remain in isolation for 10 days.

Crystal Sky, Britain’s largest winter sports company, told Sky News: “Unfortunately, due to the short notice of new Austrian entry demand, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our holiday in Austria on December 27th.
“We know that last minute testing is very difficult, especially on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
“With low availability and testing capability across the country, we recognize that most of our customers are unable to meet this new travel requirement.”
Strict travel rules have also hit the cruise line MSC Cruise, which has canceled four UK departures by its MSC Magnifica ship due to epidemic controls across Europe.
Ships scheduled to depart Southampton on December 21 and 28 and January 4 and 11 were due to arrive in France, Germany and the Netherlands, all of which have introduced new travel rules.
Ryanair and EasyJet expect to reduce capacity for January and reduce passenger numbers.
A Ryanair spokesman said: “In response to these restrictions, Ryanair has now reduced its January capacity by 33%, reducing its planned January traffic from about 10 million to 6-7 million. “
