The Google I/O 2022 conference took place last week, and as usual, it didn’t disappoint. Google has announced a whole bunch of new devices out there, including the Google Pixel 7 smartphone and Pixel Watch. And for productivity, it has made a bunch of improvements to its workspace tools.

Automated summaries of Documents and Spaces

Google Docs will soon have the amazing ability to summarize a document using the power of Google’s Artificial Intelligence (AI). The feature will eventually come to Spaces, where it can identify the most relevant information from a conversation and group it into a summary, helping those who missed a meeting get up to speed quickly.

Few details are available about this new feature. Google did not say if there will be a document length limitation or how it will handle more technical documents.

Increase visibility in Google Meet

Google Meet video calls will now look even better thanks to Portrait Restore and Portrait Light, which use artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve image quality and video call brightness. These features mitigate some of the shortcomings of poor connectivity and low light to ensure that everyone can see. Processing takes place in the cloud to avoid affecting the device’s battery life and does not require any user action. He can even adjust the default light position to illuminate parts of his face, similar to what he does in Google’s mobile camera app. In addition to that, Google Meet will also get the automatic meeting transcription feature.

Echo reduction

Audio is an important part of the meeting, and echo can greatly interfere with comprehension when a participant uses loudspeakers. In situations where headphones are not used, Google offers echo cancellation to combat echoes in places with sound-reflecting surfaces.

Share live on Google Meet

Live sharing will soon be available on Google Meet. This means that users will be able to share controls and interact directly within the meeting. Google demonstrated group interaction through YouTube videos and playlists. To further support live interaction via Live Sharing, Google is introducing the Google Meet Live Sharing API to developers. The API is currently in preview but has already been integrated into apps from partners like YouTube, Heads Up!, UNO! Mobile and Kahoot. Soon, Google hopes to enable shared viewing and participation in activities such as playing games or training with others. Developers can access this feature through the Google Early Access Program.

Best malware protection for Google Workspace

Based on a zero-trust software design approach, Google Workspace will benefit from more robust security features. In response to the growing trend of including malware in common office documents, Google is improving phishing and malware protection in Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Soon, these apps will be able to alert the user and direct them to a secure solution when they detect malware or a phishing link embedded in a file they are about to access.

The company also noted that Gmail now blocks over 99.9% of spam and phishing attempts thanks to a smart security system that learns from every attack attempt.
