G7: UK calls for unity against Russia

Liverpool, United Kingdom – The United Kingdom has called for the unity of the G7 countries to confront the “aggressors”, especially Russia.

The G7 foreign ministers are meeting in Liverpool, England, at the weekend.

The British deplore Russia’s “malign behavior”, especially with regard to Ukraine, and tensions with China and Iran.

“We need to defend ourselves against the growing threats from hostile actors,” British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in her opening remarks. We must unite against the aggressors who seek to restrict the boundaries of freedom and democracy.

NATO fears that troop movements and military equipment in Russia may be a precursor to an invasion of Ukraine. The United States and its allies threatened Moscow with severe sanctions if this happened.

The Russian government denies it intends to invade its neighbor and accuses Ukraine of having aggressive aims.

Ms. Truss and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed ways to deter Russia. According to British sources, both warned Russia that the invasion “would be a strategic mistake with grave consequences.”

The US Secretary of State announced on Saturday that Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried will visit Kiev and Moscow next week to “reinforce the US commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, ‘independence, and territorial integrity’.” She intends to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
