Formula 1 | Ralph deals with the Netflix documentary “Schumacher”

Ralph Schumacher has a limited presence in the Netflix documentary “Schumacher”, which traces the career of his brother Michael. He justifies this by the fact that his Formula 1 career, which ran from 1997 to 2007, was not in the years covered by most documentaries.

“It’s been so many years that I haven’t been in Formula One.” Ralph remembers. Of course there could have been many more years covered, but it would have been a very long time. But I think it’s been done very well, at least in terms of motorsport and the sport itself.”

However, he is pleased with the tone used in the documentary and the way it was directed: “There are also a lot of private points of view, from the family, especially the children and their mother. I thought this documentary was really cool and very open-minded.”

During his active years in Formula 1, Ralf Schumacher recalled the overwhelming media attention he and his brother had received.

“When I arrived in F1…we were as famous as Helmut Kohl [ancien chancelier d’Allemagne] in time. You can’t go anywhere. The popular press was huge. It was the same for me. I was thinking I’d be very happy when this is over at some point.”

During Ralph’s years in karting, his brother was always there to lend a hand and advice.

“Our relationship has always been good, my brother and I, but we have a difference of six and a half years. Michael left home early. At the age of sixteen, he was gone when he started his apprenticeship. More than 10 years at that time.”

“He worked with me from the start in karting – he was very helpful. We trained to overtake. Then in Formula 1 it was a little bit different, but very fun there too.”

“We had a great childhood, we spent a lot of time together. We were looking forward to winter when the kart track was closed so we had more time to ourselves. It was great.”

“We had a great time together, especially at this level and in the most beautiful places in the world. They were great times.”
