Foreign Secretary visits UK for G7 meeting

Seoul, Dec. 10. (Yonhap) — Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong will travel to the United Kingdom on Friday to attend the Group of Seven foreign and development ministers meeting this weekend, his ministry said.

The ministry said Chung will attend the G7 meeting in Liverpool on Saturday and Sunday to discuss health, safety and economic issues and forge closer relations with developed countries.

South Korea is not part of the G7 but has been invited along with Australia, India, South Africa and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The United Kingdom holds the presidency of the Group of Seven this year.

He noted that during the meeting, Chung will make remarks on international cooperation for equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, establishing flexible supply chains and strengthening regional cooperation with G7 members.

Chung plans to hold bilateral talks with some of his counterparts in major countries on the sidelines of the rally, and arrangements are underway, according to Seoul officials.

The question of whether he will meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, who took office last month, is of particular interest, amid longstanding tensions between the two neighbors over historical issues.
