After launching the initiative # WeRaceAsOne Formula 1, last year, Formula One laid out its plans to increase diversity and inclusion, in addition to the broader plans already outlined in the 2019 Diversity and Inclusion strategy.
Formula 1 announced last year that it would focus specifically, as a sport, on creating employment and education opportunities for underrepresented groups with a personal contribution of $1 million from non-executive president, Chase Carey, to fund primarily, but not exclusively, engineering-focused scholarships for students. Underrepresented.
Today, on the eve of the tenth round of the 2021 season, Formula 1 has just announced the following commitments in key areas of the company:
- Formula 1 Engineering Scholarships for ten students from underrepresented groups including ethnic minorities, women and people from disadvantaged backgrounds Each scholarship will cover the full cost of the student’s tuition fees, plus a living allowance. Fellows will be part of the start of UK undergraduate courses in September 2021 and MSc (postgraduate) courses in Italy. All 10 Formula 1 teams are committed to providing academics with work experience opportunities while they are at university. The participating universities represent different regions of the UK and Italy, and each will conduct an independent selection process to determine scholarship recipients.

- MUNER – Motorvehicle University of Emilia-Romagna (Italy) – 3 boats

- Formula 1 Professional Training Program: Formula 1 will place two long-term trainees from unrepresented groups within its organization in 2021. The apprenticeship will begin in September and will focus on mechanical engineering.
- Formula 1 training program: Six trainees from the low-representation groups will be offered positions in the organization in 2021, with a mix of short and long-term internships. Two coaching drills have already been awarded within the motorsports and marketing teams, with the remaining four set to take place over the next few weeks through several D&I partners, including: BCOMS, which works with talented sports media enthusiasts looking to advance their careers in media ; Diversity-driven, its mission is to educate individuals and organizations about the value of diversity and inclusion in motorsport; and various other initiatives that train and encourage youth from underrepresented groups or who have limited educational or employment opportunities.
