Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin insisted on Monday that the United States should completely lift unilateral sanctions against Cuba.
The spokesman said the above while responding to a question about media reports that the US State Department announced visa restrictions on 28 Cuban officials on July 9.
Wang told a press conference that China firmly supports the efforts of the Cuban government and its people to maintain social stability. Unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States against Cuban officials are typically “coercive diplomacy” that have no basis in international law.
Wang said the UN General Assembly has passed 29 consecutive resolutions calling for the US to end the economic, trade and financial embargo against Cuba.
“We urge the United States to heed the international community’s call for justice, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and fully lift unilateral sanctions against Cuba,” the spokesman said.
