Mayor Valerie Plante made the announcement during the plenary session of the ICLEI Subnational Governments and Cities Summit.
“Leadership in Montreal and other cities is essential to influencing other levels of government. The COP XV It was a critical opportunity that we seized to engage the world’s cities in concrete actions to protect biodiversity. I am very proud of thatMontreal commitment It has succeeded in mobilizing 47 cities from 5 continents representing more than 113 million inhabitants. By committing to 15 concrete actions to protect biodiversity, cities are demonstrating their leadership and capacity for action, which should serve as an example for the adoption of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, said Mayor of Montreal, Valerie Plante.
Cities are at the forefront of experiencing global biodiversity loss and suffering the consequences. And as local governments, they are also well placed to act concretely and quickly to halt this decline.
