Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang met with US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns in Beijing on Monday, saying the top priority now is to stabilize Sino-US relations, avoid a downward spiral and prevent unexpected incidents between the two great countries. The Chinese diplomat also urged the US side to think deeply to pull the bilateral relations out of the difficult situation.
China-US relations are of great importance not only to the two countries but also to the world. In November 2022, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden successfully met in Bali, Indonesia, and reached an important consensus. Chen told Burns that the series of wrong words and deeds by the United States since then has undermined the hard-won positive momentum in Sino-US relations.
Since then, the Chinese official said, the dialogue and cooperation agenda agreed upon by the two sides has been stalled and relations between the two countries have again fallen into a frosty situation. Qin said the top priority now is to stabilize China-US relations, avoid a downward spiral, and prevent unexpected incidents between the two countries, which should be the most fundamental consensus between China and the United States and the rules of coexistence between the two great countries. .
China will adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation proposed by President Xi to manage Sino-US relations. It is hoped that the US side will think deeply about bilateral relations, meet China halfway, and wish. The Chinese diplomat said, push the Sino-US relations out of the difficult situation and return to the right track.
Some experts said bilateral relations have faced increasing difficulties since a US F-22 fighter jet shot down a Chinese drone in February, reflecting growing anti-China hysteria in Washington. In addition, tensions between the US and China escalated in the wake of the Taiwan regional leader’s provocative “crossing” through the US in April.
Chen told Burns that the United States should correct its understanding of China and return to a rational way of thinking, not seek communication while seeking containment, and avoid “saying one thing but doing another.”
The United States must respect the results and China’s red line, and stop undermining China’s sovereignty, security and development interests. Chen said.
The United States should handle unexpected incidents between the two countries calmly, professionally and pragmatically to avoid further impact on China-US relations. Chen said it should advance dialogue and cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, reciprocity and mutual benefit. Burns is also expected to have more contacts, exchanges and ideas in China, to serve as a bridge between the two countries, and to make constructive efforts to improve relations.
