Chelsea Villarreal kick-off time, team news, live broadcast and how to watch the Champions League winners vs. Europa League winners

Chelsea start their campaign in 2021/22 against Villarreal in the European Super Cup just three days before the opening match of the Premier League.

The Blues will host London rival Crystal Palace in the first game of the new season on Saturday 14 August at 3pm ET.

But before that, they will make a trip to Belfast for the European Super Cup.

Chelsea beat Manchester City in the Champions League final last season and will now face European champions Villarreal in the Super Cup.

The West Londoners have appeared in the main game four times, winning it only once in 1998.

Villarreal, who beat Manchester United and won the Europa League in May, will make their first appearance in the Super Cup.

Chelsea will be relieved that the match will take place at Windsor Park in Belfast, which means they won’t have to travel long before their first Premier League game.

Tuesday 27 July: Bournemouth defeat 2-1

Sunday August 1st: beat Arsenal 2-1

Wednesday August 4th: 2-2 draw with Tottenham

Wednesday 11 August: Villarreal (Windsor Park) 3pm – UEFA Super Cup

Saturday 14 August: Crystal Palace (Stamford Bridge) at 3 pm in the English Premier League

European Super Cup: date and time

Chelsea vs Villarreal is scheduled to take place at Windsor Park in Belfast on Wednesday 11 August.

It will start at 8pm UK time.

There will be 30 minutes of extra time if the results are tied after 90 minutes and penalties will be used to decide the match if necessary.

Twelve substitutes may be named and a maximum of three may be used in substitutions, with the fourth permitted in overtime.

European Super Cup: How to proceed

BT Sport once again owns the TV rights to all European matches this season.

The Super Cup will be broadcast live on BT Sport 1 from 7pm. It can be streamed via the BT Sport app.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel: “What better way to start the season than in the European Final!

“I have great respect for Villarreal and Unai Emery. I mean they will have to call [the Europa League] Coming soon Unai Emery Cup! It’s unbelievable.

“I think they will approach this match feeling they have nothing to lose. However, we will do everything we can to win the title.”

Villarreal coach Unai Emery: “I want to win the Super Cup because I haven’t won yet. I was involved in two and lost both. It would be a great way to finish last season.”

“We can make the story again and do something cool before the new campaign.

“The Super Cup will show our ability to play a great team like Chelsea, the European champions and, for me, the best team in the world.”
