Chacos: Mauritius and United Kingdom continue talks with aim of “future deal”

As agreed at the start of negotiations on the sovereignty of the Chacos Archipelago, Mauritius and the United Kingdom reviewed the negotiations and reached agreement on the next steps. This was revealed in the cabinet meeting held on Friday.

The Prime Ministers of Mauritius and the United Kingdom met on February 14, 2023. The parties welcomed the progress made in negotiations on the sovereignty of the Chacos Archipelago and agreed to continue negotiations on the agreement in the coming months.

As a reminder, on November 3, 2022, the Prime Minister informed the National Assembly that Mauritius and the United Kingdom held constructive talks on November 23 and 24, 2022, January 11 and 12, 2023 and February 23 and 24, 2023. 2023 Implementation of Sovereignty of Chacos Archipelago.

These discussions, according to the Council of Ministers, helped to improve understanding between the two sides and included issues related to the resettlement of ex-citizens, the continued effective operation of the United Kingdom-United States joint military base in Diego Garcia. Chagos Archipelago, as well as strengthening our cooperation on ongoing issues such as environmental and marine environment protection, enhancing security and the fight against illegal activities in the region.
