Catalonia will vote on its candidacy for the 2030 Winter Olympics

Catalonia announced, Monday, that it will organize a local referendum on the candidacy of the Spanish Pyrenees to organize the Winter Olympics in 2030, which is already facing multiple resistance.

This consultation, scheduled for July 24, will consist of two parts and will be “politically binding”, says the Minister of the Presidency of the Generalitat, the Catalan regional government, Laura Villagra.

Residents of the Pyrenees municipalities likely to host the largest number of Olympic events will first be invited to say whether the Catalan government should maintain its candidacy. according to mme Villagra, 55,000 people can be brought in to speak on the issue. “We are listening directly to the citizens” who might be affected, she insisted during a press conference.

Residents of other nearby cities will be asked if they would like to participate in the organization of the event, which environmentalists and local associations oppose. According to the Stop JO platform, which is supported by several personalities, including Spanish mountain star Kilian Journet, it would be “irresponsible” to organize the event in a region where there is much less snow than climate change.

Beyond these objections, the Spanish candidacy faces disagreements between Catalonia and Aragon, the neighboring region with which the draft candidacy was initially designed.

Disturbed by the distribution of events it considers unbalanced, the latter refused to endorse the technical draft for candidacy on Friday, which was approved by the central government, the Catalan regional government and the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE). According to this project, Catalonia will host alpine skiing, figure skating, figure skating and ice hockey. Aragon will host biathlon, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and speed skating events, as well as curling.

Other locations, as yet to be determined, will be filled in for this nomination in order to host ski jumping, joint northern events, bobsleigh, skeleton, and waterslide events.

Only one city, at this point, has formally applied to participate in the 2030 Winter Olympics: Japan’s Sapporo, which hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics. But other cities have shown interest, including Salt Lake City, USA, and Vancouver, Canada.
