While only a “small amount” has been detected so far, there could be more as early as this week.

“The holiday season data will come out this week and the next. Then we’ll have a better idea of how it actually trades in Quebec,” explains Inès Levade, a clinical specialist in medical biology, in an interview with LCN.

This new sub-variant looks even more ferocious than its predecessors.

“The first data seem to confirm the fact that they have higher rates of infection. This still has to be confirmed by studies, but the new mutations that this variant has been able to acquire, especially in comparison with the parental strains, and therefore XBB or XBB.1, seem to confirm The way the virus attaches to human cells is at a higher level, and after that, it is highly resistant to immunity,” says the specialist.

These characteristics could explain, according to the latter, “why the US is increasing so rapidly.”
