On Friday, the Spanish police announced the arrest in Barcelona of the godfather of the Calabrian mafia (Ndrangheta), confirming that he is one of the most wanted criminals in Italy.
The 34-year-old suspect was identified by the Civil Guard with his initials GR alone, at Barcelona’s grand market, Mercat de Sant Gervasi, thanks to the observation of a member of his family.
Police said in a statement that he had been on the run for “several years”, and was wanted in Italy on charges of drug trafficking, money laundering, and membership in a mafia organization.
The Spanish police said that French anti-drug investigators initially tracked them and managed to escape one of his family members with the help of the Italian police.
Last November, the suspect was tried in absentia by an Italian court and sentenced to 20 years in prison for playing a central role in a drug smuggling and money laundering network in Italy.
The Spanish police said that his 74-year-old father, who also has ties to the Mafia, was arrested while being held in Parma (Italy).
Headquartered in Calabria in southern Italy, Ndrangheta is one of the richest and most powerful crime gangs due to its control of most of the cocaine that enters Europe.
She expanded her activities all over the world, becoming more terrifying than the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.
