BMW offers a huge 31-inch screen inside the car to entertain rear-seat passengers

BMW revealed a new in-car technology called the theater screen at this year’s CES. It’s not clear when or if this massive 31-inch 32:9 screen will be available to consumers, but BMW suggests it could be installed in the roof of cars somehow. The 8K screen has a resolution of around 8000 x 2000 and can play content in 16:9, 21:9, or 32:9 aspect ratios. It runs Amazon Fire OS, which means it should have access to most modern video streaming services. And other Fire TV apps that can stream over the car’s 5G connection. Theater mode includes surround sound of course, with a system of more than 30 speakers from Bowers & Wilkins. BMW describes the sound as “four-dimensional” because it includes speakers built into the rear seats themselves so that spectators can feel the acoustic vibrations in the most intense moments. When the display comes down from the roof, BMW says: “The side windows and rear window sun blinds are closed and the ambient lighting at the rear is dimmed.” Honestly, this sounds like a great way to watch a movie.

BMW has a working prototype of the in-car cinema screen at CES which BMWBlog has hands-on experience. The company tried to hide the exact model of the car in which the system was installed and did not answer questions about its identity, but BMWBlog reports that it appears to be part of the company’s luxury 7 Series.

The company has not yet announced when the system will be available to customers or how much it might end up costing. But during the company’s presentation at CES, the BMW presenter said the features “look very similar to what will be launched in series production very soon.” This suggests it could appear before BMW’s other big tech announcement at CES, its color-changing E Ink car, which it called an “advanced research and design project”.
