(Mexico City) United States President Joe Biden said he was unaware of the contents of classified documents dating to his vice president under Barack Obama (2009-2017) that were found in an office he sometimes used as workplaces.
“I was notified of this discovery and was surprised to learn that documents related to the government were transferred to this office. But I don’t know what is in the documents,” the US president told reporters on the sidelines of a summit with the Mexican president and Canadian prime minister in Mexico City.
He confirmed that his lawyers would “fully cooperate” in examining these documents, expressing his hope that this examination would end “soon”.
The documents were found “when my attorney cleaned out my office at the University of Pennsylvania,” Joe Biden detailed.
Once the lawyers discovered that some of it was classified, they “did what they had to do, and called the archives” to hand it over, according to the president.
This “small number of documents classified as classified” were found in a “locked safe” at the Ben Biden Center, a think tank affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, Richard Sauber, the president’s legal counsel, said Monday.
“The documents have not been the subject of any request or prior request,” and since their delivery to the archives, attorneys for Joe Biden have continued to cooperate to “ensure that the archives are in their possession from any archives of the Obama-Biden administration,” he added.
The FBI conducted a stunning search of Donald Trump’s Florida residence in August in order to recover thousands of documents, including a hundred classified defense secrets, that the former president had stolen after he left the White House and that he had even then refused to return to the archives.
According to press reports, these secret documents that were seized in his Mar-a-Lago club contain particularly sensitive information about China and Iran, in addition to nuclear secrets.
“When will the FBI search several of Joe Biden’s residences, or even the White House?” Donald Trump responded in a press release.
