“I could not go and compete in Tokyo,” Samuelson said in a statement. Being in the Olympics was a young girl’s dream and I hope to make it happen one day. My heart is broken. I’ve been fully vaccinated and taken all precautions, but I know things will work out. “

Samuelson, who plays for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm, contracted COVID-19 while training in Las Vegas. During her European season, she went home to get the shot to help the United States qualify for the Olympics in May.

She will be replaced by Jackie Young, who played on the US 3-on-3 team in practice in 2020. Young joins Stephanie Dolson, Alisha Gray and Kelsey Bloom, her Las Vegas ace teammate.

The Americans trained in Las Vegas for a week and auditioned every day. They were together in the field, at lunch and dinner, and kept their distance during these meals.

The US team was traveling with the men’s and women’s teams five to five on Monday. The first Olympic basketball tournament kicks off from three to three on July 24 and the preliminary round runs through July 27.
