They are called Przewalski’s horses. A name that may be difficult to pronounce, but it describes a wild species native to Mongolia. It differs from other, more common horse breeds, in its small size. They are often in shades of brown with black tips and a mullet stripe (a black line on the back), which is a short, spiky mane of black that sheds each year.
By 1960, there were only a dozen left and the breed was on the verge of extinction. Fortunately, maintenance and breeding programs have been put in place to try to save them; Today there are about 800 people in the world, which is still a relatively low number. The park welcomed them as part of a conservation program called species survival AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) map, an organization that manages the breeding of endangered species to ensure genomes are well preserved.
