(Buenos Aires) Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will have another operation on his right knee.
However, he still hopes to play in the Olympics this summer.
The Argentine has been on the sidelines since he injured his knee in June 2019 at Queens Club.
He has already had three operations on his right knee. The next day will be Tuesday in Chicago.
“We’ve tried conservative treatment,” wrote Del Potro, “but the pain is still there.”
“The doctor knows I want to play tennis again and be able to play in the Olympics, so we agreed to get the surgery done as soon as possible.”
Del Potro defeated Roger Federer in the Final in New York in 2009, earning his only Grand Slam title.
He has suffered several long-term injuries since then. This is the fourth time he has been absent for at least eight months.
32-year-old Del Potro considered retiring after his father passed away in January. He finally decided to persevere.
The last few weeks have not been easy. He said everything has been very difficult since my father passed away.
“But I also feel the strength he’s sending me from above. I hope I can overcome this situation. I won’t stop trying.”
The tennis tournament is scheduled to begin at the Tokyo Olympics on July 24.
